A new medical centre will be built at Waterford Plaza in Karawara to help address a shortage of local doctors in the area.

Park Medical Group has been given the go-ahead to develop the new centre opposite Jamaica Blue in the IGA mall, expected to bring as many as 230 daily GP appointments to the area.

Park Medical Group managing director Raj Selvendra said there was a “critical shortage” of doctors in Perth but the facility would have an additional 10 doctors joining the centre before February 2024.

“Choosing Waterford Plaza as the location for what will be our third medical centre means Park Medical Group will be well placed to deliver much-needed medical services in the area,” he said.

“We regularly hear stories that local patients sometimes have to wait days to see a doctor.

“Not only will our brand-new practice help meet the needs of the local community, but it will also help relieve pressure on Perth’s overcrowded hospital emergency departments.”

Hoardings were scheduled to go up on Monday for construction to start on the facility.

Phase one is scheduled to open in October this year with eight new consulting rooms and an onsite pathology suite.

Construction of phase two is set to start in early 2025, bringing more doctors rooms, along with a new pathology centre and additional allied health practitioners. .

City of South Perth granted development approval for the new medical centre at Waterford Plaza at the end of May.

The new facility will be built as part of Waterford Plaza’s multi-million-dollar redevelopment of its High Street precinct which is now in progress.

The revitalised precinct will feature a mix of cafes, restaurants and outdoor dining, along with landscaped spaces and interactive art for people of all ages to explore.

Park Medical Group is currently at two separate locations in Victoria Park and East Victoria Park.
